Leadership Principles
We have adapted our Leadership Principles from the best practices of other great tech companies, most especially Amazon, which re-wrote the rules on how to grow a business without compromising the startup mentality that created its early success. Similarly, we want to preserve our dynamic and vibrant culture as we grow and to create an exceptional business that maximizes the talent and potential of our team as it grows. We want to remain light on bureaucracy and heavy on customer obsession, results, and growth. Our Leadership Principles are the way we’ll ensure that we are able to do this.
Customer obsession
BigChangers start with the customer and work backward. They work vigorously to earn and keep customer trust. Although BigChangers pay attention to competitors, they obsess over customers.
Earn trust
BigChangers listen attentively, speak candidly, and treat others respectfully. They are vocally self-critical, even when doing so is awkward or embarrassing. They are willing to admit mistakes and will learn from and react to these. They benchmark themselves and their teams against the best.
Learn and be curious
BigChangers are never done learning and always seek to improve themselves. They are curious about new possibilities and act to explore them, and we should embed this in our weekly activities. Learning for BigChangers is the ability to absorb new information readily and to put it into practice effectively.
Insist on the highest standards
BigChangers have relentlessly high standards — many people may think these standards are unreasonably high. BigChangers are continually raising the bar working within and through other teams to deliver high quality products, services, and processes. BigChangers ensure that defects do not get sent down the line and that problems are fixed so they stay fixed.
Deliver results
BigChangers focus on the key outputs for their role and deliver them with the right quality and in a timely fashion. Despite setbacks, they rise to the occasion and never settle.
Ownership
BigChangers are owners. They think long-term and don’t sacrifice long-term value for short-term results. They act on behalf of the entire company, beyond just their own team. They never say “that’s not my job.”
Dive deep
BigChangers operate at all levels, stay connected to the details, seek data to inform their decisions but are skeptical when metrics and anecdotes differ. No task is beneath them.
Bias for action
Speed matters in business. Many decisions and actions are reversible and do not need extensive study. We value calculated risk-taking.
Invent and simplify
BigChangers expect and require innovation and invention from teams and always find ways to simplify and implement lean methods. They are externally aware, look for new ideas from everywhere, and are not limited by "not invented here." As we do new things, we accept that we may be misunderstood for long periods of time.
Have backbone, disagree and commit
BigChangers are obligated to respectfully challenge decisions when they disagree, even when doing so is uncomfortable or exhausting. They need to have conviction and be tenacious; they do not compromise for the sake of social cohesion. Once a decision is determined, they commit wholly.
Frugality
BigChangers accomplish more with less. Constraints breed resourcefulness, self-sufficiency, and invention. There are no extra points for spending money, growing headcount, budget size, or fixed expenses. Leaders create more than they consume and always leave things better than how they found them.
Think big
Thinking small is a self-fulfilling prophecy. BigChangers create and communicate a bold direction that inspires results. They think differently and look around corners for ways to serve customers.
Sound judgement
BigChangers have good instincts and sound judgement. They seek diverse perspectives and work to disconfirm their beliefs. They are aware of the pitfalls of bias and strive to overcome it.
Hire and develop the best
At BigChange, we raise the performance bar with every hire and promotion. BigChange leaders recognize exceptional talent and willingly move them throughout the organization. They develop new leaders and take seriously their role in coaching others. BigChange Leaders work on behalf of all BigChangers to invent mechanisms for development.
Strive to be the earth’s best employer
Leaders work every day to create a safer, more productive, higher performing, more diverse, and more just work environment. They lead with empathy, have fun at work, and make it easy for others to have fun. Leaders ask themselves: Are my fellow BigChangers growing? Are they empowered? Are they ready for what’s next? Leaders have a vision for and commitment to their employees’ personal success, whether that be at BigChange or elsewhere.
